Aftercare
By taking these precautions and being mindful of the unique challenges posed by humid beach and surf environments, you can help ensure that your fresh tattoo heals properly and remains vibrant for years to come.
01
Keep it covered
While at the beach or in the surf, consider keeping your tattoo covered with loose, breathable clothing, a bandage or aftercare film. This helps protect it from direct exposure to sand, saltwater, and UV radiation.
02
Avoid prolonged water exposure
Saltwater can be harsh on a fresh tattoo and may cause irritation or infection. Minimise your time in the water, especially during the initial healing period. If you do get your tattoo wet, gently rinse it with freshwater afterward and pat it dry with a clean towel.
03
Use waterproof sunscreen
Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a high SPF to your tattoo before going out in the sun. Look for a waterproof or water-resistant formula to ensure it stays on even if you sweat or swim. Reapply sunscreen regularly, especially after swimming or towel-drying.
04
Stay cool and dry
Try to keep the tattooed area cool and dry as much as possible. Wear loose, breathable clothing to allow air circulation and reduce the risk of excessive sweating.
05
Protect from abrasion
Sand can be abrasive and may irritate your tattoo if it comes into contact with it. Avoid sitting or lying directly on sandy surfaces, and be mindful of any activities that could rub or scrape against your tattoo.
06
Moisturise frequently
Saltwater and sun exposure can dry out your skin, which may prolong the healing process for your tattoo. Apply a fragrance-free, hypoallergenic moisturiser several times a day to keep your tattoo hydrated and promote healing.
07
Avoid swimming in contaminated water
If the beach or surf area is known for pollution or bacterial contamination, avoid swimming altogether until your tattoo is fully healed. Exposing a fresh tattoo to contaminated water increases the risk of infection.
08
Avoid scratching or picking
Itching is a common part of the healing process, but resist the urge to scratch or pick at your tattoo. Doing so can damage the skin and interfere with the healing process, leading to potential scarring or infection.
09
Monitor for signs of infection
Monitor your tattoo for any signs of infection, such as increased redness, swelling, warmth, or discharge. If you notice any concerning symptoms, seek medical attention promptly to prevent complications.
10
Follow aftercare instructions
Listen to your tattoo artist's aftercare advice and follow their instructions carefully, specially in beach and surf conditions. They may recommend specific products or techniques tailored to your tattoo and skin type.
